I was laid off from my tech job shortly after my 2nd child was born as well (2022, the year of the mass tech layoff). It’s sucked but as corny as it sounds it was the best thing to ever happen to me. Your point about so many people end up in a just career they don’t love is a good one.

I know I felt the same way about my last 2 layoffs, and heard the same from many others! It often is the push so many of us need.

It’s also a good reminder that your company isn’t your “family” at the end of the day they give 0 fucks

i wish i had read this post during my last layoff experience! i really appreciate the section "grieve the old plan, dream a new one" — it's wild how quickly you're expected to adjust your entire vision of the future. thanks for sharing!

It’s so true — it does seem like you have to shift and change plans instantly, and that grief is real. We were planning a BIG move to a new city that we put on pause indefinitely. I still think of that move, but we just had to pivot and make our lives here work 🫶

Gah I'm sorry to hear that! But agreed, it's all about adapting! :)
